Summary/Abstract: This article is an examination of the linguistic means used to denote the term “some of God’s attributes” in the first twenty psalms of the Ukrainian translation by Ivan Ohienko. The ethnolinguistic analysis (based on the methodology of Jerzy Bartmiński) of the ways of verbalising this meaning shows that the translator – in his efforts to translate with scientific accuracy and, at the same time, create the basis for a Ukrainian literary language – used a whole treasury of Ukrainian lexical and lexical-grammatical means, implementing the thought patterns of the Eastern nations concerning the characteristics of God. These include, in particular: “unreachable” – being at the highest part of the “top-down” sacral conceptual model; “almighty” – the source of human power; “defense” – protection against enemies; “the one who loves the righteous”, “impeccable,” “irascible, fearsome,” and others. Research on the ways of verbalising the most common conceptual models opens up a broad field for further studies of the linguistic image of God in the context of a detailed analysis of the actions of the members of the groups “God–Man (sinner/righteous)” and “God–the devil”.
