Summary/Abstract: The main purpose of this paper is to examine the differences between parish registers and the civil registration carried out in Transylvania in 1895 in what concerns the required data about individuals. The approach was based on a sample consisting of both types of registers belonging to Ocna-Dej, analyzed for the period 1895–1900. The main conclusion of the comparative analysis is that the main advantage of the civil records is the uniformization of data and, obviously, a more accurate data registration. Still, the parish registers remain richer sources of information, extremely valuable for social history.
