Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the actor’s transmedial presence in two contemporary British productions of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Both performances fuse traditional theatre practices and visual media thus exemplifying the logical correlation between the notions of magic and technology. In the light of the concept of intermediality, which ascribes equal importance to different media in a given production and the creation of a holistic unity, I propose a view of the actor as engaged in a transformative relationship with technology. The uses of film/video material, effectively positioning the performer in a mixed stage and screen reality (Forkbeard Fantasy’s Shooting Shakespeare, 2004), and the live motion capture, creating a digital avatar for the physically present Ariel (Royal Shakespeare Company’s The Tempest, 2016), build the tension between embodied and two-dimensional presence that contributes to the complexity of the characters.
