Summary/Abstract: Living donor kidney transplantation is the preferred treatment for end-stage renal disease because of the improved short- and long-term results and the avoidance of negative consequences associated with dialysis. This article presents the medical, legal and ethical aspects of kidney transplantation from living donors. It discusses the process of selecting a potential living donor, the criteria for potential donor exclusion, procedures related to post-donation care, as well as dilemmas related to transplantation from living donors. Additionally, aspects of the Kidney Paired Donation Program are presented.
