Summary/Abstract: Information is currently perceived as one of the vital consumer goods in the modern world whereas the consumer society is a type of society in which consumption is paramount. Therefore, it is worth reflecting on the significance of information in this type of society. The aim of the paper is to present the role of information in the consumer society, in particular in reference to consumer behaviour. The modern consumer makes a number of essential consumer decisions influenced by the information obtained and received from various sources. The method applied in this paper was that of literature review related to the subject matter. The considerations in this paper lead to the conclusion that information plays an important role in the consumer society. This may be perceived in a few aspects: starting from the informational or steering function, which is visible in consumer decisions, through the consumer function and the culture-creating and social role of information reflected e.g., in the created culture of consumption or consumption patterns. The analysis in this paper allows to present the up-to-date topic related to the sociology of consumption, which further facilitates the presentation of the essence of significant problems related to the role of information in the consumer society.
