Summary/Abstract: The paper describes the procedure for organizing the written tests in the 2006 EU competition for translators in which the authors took part as markers. It highlights the stages of the competition, the selection of text and the criteria for translation quality assessment. The most common translation mistakes are discussed and conclusions are drawn materializing in a list of proposals for achieving felicitous translation choices with a view to facilitating prospective applicants for translators with the EU Commission, teachers of translation and future markers. Special attention is accorded to the specific translation environment and translation practice within EU institutions.
