Summary/Abstract: The contributions in this collection pertain to a variety of multiethnic, multilingual and multicultural aspects of Canada, epitomizing the diverse academic interests of the members of the Bulgarian Chapter of the Central European Association for Canadian Studies. The Bulgarian Chapter is one of the recent additions to the Association —formed in 2004 — but since its very inception it has proved to be a vibrant and enthusiastic society for academics, to which the present volume undeniably testifies. The papers in this volume address a broad range of topics which have been grouped according to their subject matter: history/culture, literature, linguistics, and teaching. The study of Canadian culture is seen to involve both a general introduction to various aspects of Canadiana and the close scrutiny of phenomena that belong to specific subject areas.

- Summary/Abstract:This article is part of a multidisciplinary research project in Translation Studies. It investigates the changing function of Christianity in today’s Western world as reflected in the multitude of contemporary EnglishBible translations and revisions. Focusing on the controversial 'Bill C-250’ in Canada as its starting point, the article looks at ‘Bible localization’ resulting in a rapid increase in the number of English Bibles specifically aimed at various ethnic and social groups and minorities. The author argues that despite the popularity of the secularization theory and the growing tendency to eliminate religious instruction in schools in many Western countries, Localized Bibles areincreasingly used as a tool in the construction of identities.

- Summary/Abstract:The article begins with a brief overview of the federal legislation on official languages in Canada and provincial legislation in Quebec. Concern for the future of the French language materialized in the 1977 Charter of the French language, popularly known as Bill 101, ruled unconstitutional by the Canadian Supreme Court in 1988. This led to the introduction of Bill 178 (the ‘inside-outside’ law), which used the ‘notwithstanding clause to override the Canadian Charter’s guarantee of freedom of speech. Against this background, some of the issues to be discussed are: What are the implications of the ‘language police* or ‘tongue troopers’ in Quebec? Is the attempt to control English in Francophone Canada a result of the long-standing subjugation of the French and the recent resurgence of nationalism? Does making Anglophones in Quebec feel like second-class citizens help preserve French on a predominantly English-speaking continent? Will Quebecers acquire the linguistic skills needed to compete in the English-dominated global economy? Does the recent (March 31, 2005) ruling of the Supreme Court of Canada, which obliges Francophone Canadians and immigrants to Quebec to send their children to French schools, protect the French language?

- Summary/Abstract:The present article takes a closer look at Henry James’ only Canadian essay “Quebec" as a way of “translating” the sameness and the difference of Canada for his American readers in 1871, just a few years after the emergence of the new nation in Canada. I turn my attention to him rather than to the other nineteen-century travel writers in America as he was one of the major forces behind the shaping of the art of travel writing into an aesthetic experience during that time. The present paper also argues that there is a persistent cultural critique that runs through both the early and the late travel writings of fames, which becomes obvious when a comparison is made between that early travel writing and his last masterpiece, The American Scene. This is further illuminated by a brief comparison to another book, Letters from America, written by Rupert Brooke, to which Henry fames wrote a Preface in 1913.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper argues that the exiles experience of two cultures is matched by the double voice of the young narrator telling of the immediate events and of the adult narrator’s efforts to explain them. The double voice is exemplified by the discussion of the young protagonists changes in language and visual perception and the re-interpretation of the lived experience in terms of contemporary psychoanalytical and structuralist theories. Attention is also paid to the significance of the two dominant metaphors of translation and triangulation for the foregrounding of doubleness in the reconstitution of the self in exile.

- Summary/Abstract:The present article explores the theme of violence in Anne Hébert’s novel «In the Shadow of the Wind» from the viewpoint of moral philosophy. The rape of the two heroines, a central episode in the story, was inspired by a real life event which the author exploits to assign universality to evil. The allusion to Andersen’s Little Mermaid is employed to endorse the pointlessness of suffering. Driven both by misogyny and megalomania, Stevens, the perpetrator of the crime, views the rape as a piece of art, a memorable act which will bring him catharsis and allow him to acquire a new identity. The themes of sin, its redemption, and the impossibility of putting violence in writing testify to the impotence of the word against an act that transcends human reason and defies verbalization.

- Summary/Abstract:In the modem French language, the feminization of nouns denoting traditionally masculine vocations arises as an attempt to allay the social concern of political correctness. However this issue is discussed from the perspective of both the language system and the socio-cultural context of the Francophone countries. The article analyzes the different or similar ways in which the French language spoken in France and Quebec addresses the issue of literary gender equality, either respecting or transgressing the language system. This particular analysis also attempts a contrastive approach to the phenomenon in the Bulgarian language, which seems to provide more “appropriate" feminine alternatives for the corresponding masculine occupational titles.

- Summary/Abstract:Cultures can be studied by those who are native to them or by outsiders but there are fundamental differences between the two perspectives. This paper discusses a Canadian Culture Studies Course designed for Bulgarian students of English Philology. The authors elaborate on such major issues of course design as approach, data resources, methodological principles and teaching and learning strategies, supporting their selection of principles of course design with evidence from a survey aimed to explore students' background knowledge and interests in Canada and Canadian people. Evidence from students’ progress, checked in the middle and at the end of the term, is used for evaluation of the effectivity of the theoretical tenets of the course, viz., pluralistic approach to the selection of teaching materials, topic-orientation, genre variety of information input, presentation of sociocultural phenomena in their interrelatedness and experiential teaching methodology with a strong comparative element. The conclusion drawn on the basis of this evidence is that the course provides a broad enough knowledge base but fails to develop to a sufficiently high level students’ skills in interpreting and evaluating the raw data (historical facts, social experiences, survey statistics, etc.), and in forming an objective, independent stance on sociocultural issues pertaining to the target culture.

- Summary/Abstract:This research aims at formulating why and how world citizenship could be introduced in the educational context in Bulgaria through a Bulgarian-Canadian dialogue. What is presented is the case of Sofia University, Faculty of Classical and Modern Languages. The research foundation has been laid on seven axes, which formulate the vision about grounding foreign language learning in the context of teaching/learning intercultural communication, interwoven with developing citizenship awareness, through mastering more than one foreign language (English and French).
