Summary/Abstract: In the modem French language, the feminization of nouns denoting traditionally masculine vocations arises as an attempt to allay the social concern of political correctness. However this issue is discussed from the perspective of both the language system and the socio-cultural context of the Francophone countries. The article analyzes the different or similar ways in which the French language spoken in France and Quebec addresses the issue of literary gender equality, either respecting or transgressing the language system. This particular analysis also attempts a contrastive approach to the phenomenon in the Bulgarian language, which seems to provide more “appropriate" feminine alternatives for the corresponding masculine occupational titles.
