RECENSIONS OF THE SEPTUAGINT

Summary/Abstract: The paper shows that antique recensions of biblical text were first and foremost theologically motivated. The contemporary scholarly logic and textual criticism diverge from the original ambition of the editor (translator) of the Biblical text. When it comes to the method used, the recension’s overviews are given chronologically in order to create a better sense of the diachronical dimension of the text. At the same time corrections and improvements of biblical texts were taken into consideration. The Prechristian recension, so called καίγε–recension is shown at the beginning. It is interesting because it emerged in the climate of the dispute between Christianity and Judaism. Following this recension are shown the basic features of Jewish recensions (Aquila, Symmachus, Theodotion). They emerged as reactions to the text of the Septuagint. Jewish recensions are corrections of the Greek text on the basis of contemporary Jewish text. They often represent a new translation, especially when it comes to the theologically important passages and verses. Christian recensions (the Hexapla, Hesychius, Lucian) had the aim of improving the text of the Septuagint which gradually changed due to copying and transcribing. Origen’s Hexapla is of the great importance for understanding the aim of the contemporary editors. The key motive for such an endeavour was not the critical scholarly reconstruction of the text, but the selection of some of the textual version which were more fitting with the theological scope of the editor.
