Summary/Abstract: In this paper, I discuss the reasons why the concept of immersion became more prominent in the last decade. I also offer an argument why immersive theatre should be considered as a separate genre, one which is informed by the traditional theatrical formats but puts the audience in the center of the artwork. I analyze in detail two performances of the Danish-Austrian theatre company, SIGNA: Wir Hunde/Us Dogs and Das Heuvolk. I will point out how important the processes of the audience’s onboarding and the creation of the atmosphere are in immersive theatre to produce more engaging experiences. I will conclude the paper with a discussion of how SIGNA’s performances encompass these characteristics and how they also offer a reflection of our society and hierarchical structures.
