Summary/Abstract: “The laity, gathered together in the people of God and established in the one body of Christ under a single head, whoever they are, are called as living members to work with all strength they have received from the goodness of the creator and the grace of the redeemer for the growth of the Church and its continual sanctifi cation.” (LG, 33) Th e doctrine of the laity occupies a central place in the theology. Th is may represent an attempt to appreciate the role of the laity aft er centuries of obedience and passivity in the Catholic Church. Jesus said: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”. (Mk 10, 45) Serving and giving are the major characteristics of the Christian lifestyle. If we are going to be like Christ, we must learn to serve and give. Th e actual teaching of the Church is that laypeople have a distinct and very real role in the spreading the Gospel, which the Church desperately needs them to carry out with the authority, creativity, and power that the Holy Spirit has given them in Baptism. There is so much need today for mature Christian personalities, conscious of their baptismal identity, of their vocation and mission in the Church and in the world!
