Summary/Abstract: Museums as a medium are based on the difference between museological context and context of reality. In the process of musealization, objects from the "real" context pass into the museum context, thus becoming museum objects. Crisis of the traditional museum is manifested in its understanding of museum as a repository of old, socially and temporally decontextualized objects. The conceptual crisis is also reflected in the attitude that the basic role of the museum is to deal exclusively with the past. Museum’s absolute commitment to the past, has led to the ignorance of real life. The key question is how to turn museum institutions, from institutions that deal almost exclusively with the past into institutions that offer answers to today's people and communities’ specific problems and interests. The concept of new museology/critical museum questions the reduction of museum institution to the past and the transformation of museum objects into fetishes, eternal truths, which have no connection with the present day social context. Museums can only survive if they serve today's people by mediating the past and the present.
