Summary/Abstract: The reign of King Stefan Milutin marked a completely new stage in the development of the Serbian state and significantly changed the Serbian cultural paradigm. King Milutin’s policy continued the traditions of the Nemanichi dynasty, whose rulers in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries freed themselves from the Byzantine Empire, established a new Slavic autocephalous church, but at the same time did not interrupt the cultural and political relationship with the Byzantine centers. At the time King Milutin had come to power, Serbia, which had received the status as a state in the first quarter of the 13th century, had established its political ambitions, strengthened its multilateral diplomatic relations, and gained sufficient influence in Balkan politics.
