Summary/Abstract: The propaedeutic stage is now an integral part of the formation for the priesthood. The article presents the documents of the Church concerning this aspect of formation starting from the Second Vatican Council. By presenting and analyzing successive documents on priestly formation, the author presents a progressive development of the idea of the propaedeutical period up to the latest document The Way of Priestly Formation in Poland. The motives for introducing this stage, the assumed goals, and the means for formation are presented. The article also discusses the difficulties connected with the necessity of introducing the one-year propaedeutical stage in Polish seminaries, associated, among others, with the small number of candidates or the lack of a detailed educational program. The author also points to the possibility of taking advantage of the experience of some dioceses in Poland related to this stage of formation (in several seminaries, such a stage has already been introduced).
