“Gazeta Literacka” as an Instance of Literary Ephemera from the Period of Galician Autonomy

Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to present “Gazeta Literacka. Najtańsze pismo w Galicji” (Literary Gazette. The Cheapest Newspaper in Galicia), a Lviv ephemeral newspaper from 1871, in a broader context of the publishing movement of Lviv in the period of Galician autonomy and to discuss its thematic and genre structures. The layout and illustrations included in “Gazeta Literacka” are analyzed as well. The study bases on 9 consecutive issues made available in a digitalized form in the Jagiellonian Digital Library and is supplemented by biographical notes of authors who published in the newspaper. “Gazeta Literacka” constitutes a fascinating source for exploring the history of the Lviv press in the 19th century, particularly from the point of view of mutual influence and complementarity of its political, social, cultural, and literary content.
