Summary/Abstract: The verb tarpininkauti (Engl. to mediate) is used with a number of word forms and constructions, which perform quite different functions. The preposition tarp and its construction with the Dative case of a person refers to one or both parties for whose benefit mediation is held. The aim of the mediation is first of all, expressed by a secondary component of the meaning of purpose and the construction with the preposition dėl. For the same purpose the Dative and Locative cases of some abstract nouns are also used. Half-participles and gerunds (indeclinable active participles), when used with the werb tarpininkauti, first of all, have the meaning of simultaniety of the subordinate action expressed by half-participles and gerunds with the main action of the sentence and has a shade of meaning of purpose; half-participle is hardly used to clearly specify the purpose of mediation. The construction with the preposition pas and the verb tarpininkauti should not be used to identify one of the parties of mediation; neither should the infinitive when the purpose of mediation is meant.
