Summary/Abstract: The verbs stigti, stokoti, trūkti ('to be short of, to lack') are synonyms in the meaning of 'to be in need of, not have/be enough or sufficient'. The meaning determines the combinatory potential of the word, which is realized in the sentence in different word forms and constructions. The nominative or dative case refers to a person, thing or phenomenon, who/which is in need of, lacks something; thus the function of a beneficiary is realized. The choice between the two cases determines the usage tendencies of the verbs stigti, stokoti, trūkti: the verb stokoti gives preference to the nominative case, stigti and trūkti are more frequent with the dative. The nominative or dative can be well substituted by a locative form or construction. Then the verbs acquire the meaning of 'being insufficient in some place'. In addition to the nominative or dative cases, the verbs also require two more actants: the genitive case, which identifies the insufficient substance (the function of contentive is realized), and the dative, the infinitive or a clause of purpose which identify the purpose of insufficiency (the function of finitive is realized). The genitive is mandatory in the sentence, whereas the attendant with the meaning of purpose is optional and often deleted in the sentence.
