Special vocabulary and its treatment in Bendrinės Lietuvių Kalbos Žodynas (Dictionary of Standard Lithuanian)

Summary/Abstract: The vocabulary of special usage areas as provided in the Dictionary of Standard Lithuanian should exceed in the number of items the same vocabulary as given in the Dictionary of Modern Lithuanian. The difference, however, is not so obvious. Widely spread variants, doublets or synonyms should not be ignored; their interrelations should rather be shown in the context of language norms, actual usage and interests of all standard Lithuanian speakers. The latest actual usage is checked against several suorces rather than just one. It is important to establish whether the word is used as a term of science, technology or arts. However, dictionaries like Bendrinės Lietuvių Kalbos Žodynas, which address the society at large, should reflect the general usage rather then an exclusively specialised lexicon.
