Summary/Abstract: „unpredictable workings of culture”, another publication from the heritage of Yuri Lotman, is a semi-finished product requiring knowledge of his earlier oeuvre, if ever the reader wishes to comprehend the real importance of the book or to find some leads to do his own thinking. the „unpredictable workings of culture” represents the last phase of Lotman’s intellectual development, which involved application of Ilya Prigogine’s catastrophe theory to semiotics of culture and history. unfortunately the procedure also entailed some losses, requiring abandonment of the objectivity of the historical process, together with its essential category of kairos, and depsychologization of historical turning points. the present essay suggests a model (alexander’s number (Ἀ)) for an „inside interpretation” of those turning points. Like any text by Yuri Lotman the collection in question acts as an intellectual catalyst and, as such, provides a delightful stimulus of inspirational writing.
