Summary/Abstract: On the European continent there is a close link between the phenomenon of political modernity and the cultural substratum on which it is based. The main function in this broad process was played by the so-called "printing revolution" which in the long run gave the necessary impetus to the emergence and consolidation of national identities. The printing press generated written culture by refining vernacular languages and transforming them into an indispensable ingredient for building national consciousness. In the alternative, the foundations have been laid for an entire "knowledge infrastructure" consisting of centralized education systems, research institutions, (national) libraries, etc., each of which is becoming accessible to a wider audience. The political loyalty on which the success of the nation-state was based in Europe was largely preceded by a very important phase of cultural loyalty.
