András Krupa – collector and researcher of Slovak folklore in Hungary

Summary/Abstract: In addition to Hungarians, there are other national communities in modern Hungary, including the Slavs, the largest of which is Slovak, which preserves its language and culture. A well-known ethnologist, folklorist, public figure from Békéscsaba, initiator and organizer of many events and conferences, mediator between Hungarian and Slovak culture András (Ondrej) Krupa (1934–2015) made a great contribution to the study and preservation of Slovak folk culture in Hungary. András Krupa devoted his entire life to collecting and studying the folklore and ethnography of Slovaks in Hungary – mainly places of their more compact residence – the south-eastern regions of the country, as well as other dispersed settlements. For many decades, the researcher collected Slovak folklore, rites and customs and published them in various publications with texts and notes, descriptions and comments on them. András Krupa owns 27 research books and collections, more than a hundred publications in Hungarian and Slovak, as well as Romanian and English. His studies include regional studies, the folk culture of the Transdanubian Slovaks (Dunantula), in particular the world of rituals and beliefs, the Slovak folk calendar, as well as various genres of Slovak folklore – songs, fairy tales, short stories, etc. Krupa raised many topical issues of modern science – bilingualism, interethnic contacts in folklore and ethnography, modern life of folklore, the processes of extinction and modification of folklore genres and more. The scientist was also a good organizer, manager – one of the main organizers of the resonant in Europe «Békéscsaba International Ethnographic Conferences on the Study of Nationalities» (BNNNK), a total of 7 forums since 1975. He was a member of a number of ethnological societies and for more than 19 years was a senior researcher at the Slovak Research Institute in Békéscsaba. For more than two decades he was the editor-in-chief, member of editorial boards and author of articles in local scientific journals. He has been awarded a number of awards by Hungary and Slovakia for his work.
