Summary/Abstract: Czesław Miłosz’s Issa Valley and Claude Lévi-Strauss’ Tristes Tropiques appeared in thesame year and seem to have nothing in common: the first is a novel, the second atravel report. Both, however, were written by men of the same generation who livedas expatriates. The two books’ similarity is rooted in the idea with which their authorsstarted writing, as well as their message. In both cases, the time loop in which Miłoszand Lévi-Strauss find themselves as authors of their books, the Nachträglichkeit activein their project, is key: the story is a quest that is both recuperation and reactivation.
