Summary/Abstract: Having outlined notions of the intimate public sphere (Lauren Berlant), imperial politicsof intimacy (Ann Laura Stoler) as well as cultural definitions of intimacy (Eva Illouz,Anthony Giddens, Michael Herzfeld), Siewior presents intimate narratives from theera of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL) in songs, reportage and films which deconstructthe opposition between the public and the private. The intimate public sphere of theera was a space for the dissemination of political meanings, the reproduction ofoppression, as well as for the construction of formulas of resistance and revealingof the mechanisms of power. The notion of intimacy allows us to rethink the era beyondthe martyrological, anti-communist, male-centred concepts that dominate academicdiscourses in Poland.
