Summary/Abstract: The cyberpunk SF of the 1980s, which authors, critics and supporters hailed as a genrepreparing the ground for revolution, has come forward with notable political claims. Some are implicit in the authors’ determination to legitimise their own revolutionarystatus by establishing a lineage with the writers of 1960s SF. In establishing such links, however, writers such as Bruce Sterling avoided any reference to the political SF ofthe 1970s (Joanna Russ, Ursula Le Guin, Suzy McKee Chamas and others). Sterling, forinstance, claimed that SF was in “hibernation” in the 1970s. This article examines thenature of cyberpunk’s supposedly revolutionary agenda. It first contextualises it withits immediate feminist predecessors, and then explores its relationship to cultural iconspopular in Reagan-Era America.
