Strategies of Genre Revaluation on the Example of Fantasy Literature Reception

Summary/Abstract: In sociological terms, the actors in the literary field who wield symbolic power areresponsible for the classification and definition of genres. An important aspect ofclassificatory operations is the valuation of genre. On the example of the recentreception of fantasy literature, Pokrywka presents and codifies the following strategiesof revaluation: (1) blurring, namely the abolition of differences between fantasy andother genres; (2) exclusion, meaning the separation of the genre from others by singlingout a complex of positively valued features; (3) destabilization, that is the rejection ofclassical genology; (4) externalization, which is a sense of community with a multitudeof genre lovers; (5) internalization, which means hermetic communion with text anda distance toward mass reception; (6) elitization, namely ascribing to the genre valuesidentified with high culture.
