Back to the Future: The Challenge of Future in Memory Studies

Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the problem of the future functioning as a reference point formemory studies. The text shows that the emergence of the future as a common horizonof memory work is correlated with the increasingly clearly formulated question aboutthe need to rethink discipline’s goals and the challenge to confront the more and morefrequently recurring doubt whether remembering and recollecting are always productiveor whether they should be – gradually and consensually – replaced by forgetting and theassociated normalization of the past. The article aims to show that the future not only haslong been an – often missed – reference point of memory work but also that the failureto include the future in memory studies leads to the omission of important contemporaryphenomena and the hasty formulation of theses about “the end of the future.”
