The role of higher education didactics in German higher education

Summary/Abstract: Universities in Germany are totally independent from the state they are located in and also have relative independence from the republic; thus, they are largely able to make decisions and take measures on their own. One such area is their position on higher education didactic policy and developing competences in teaching methods for college and university teachers. This study outlines how the educational theory of higher education has developed, introducing analyses and research on its history, and looking at the establishment of networks of study courses, centers, and programs. It also examines grants and financial support from the federal and state level that help important innovations in educational development. These German initiatives can serve as role models for Hungarian universities aiming to ensure high-quality education.
