Summary/Abstract: The text traces the three stages of the old masters’ painting method, demonstrating how they achieve an incredibly rich colouring despite their poor palette. And if their colour compositions are built on the principle of harmony through a smooth transition from one range to another, then, in modern painting, colour combinations are built on contrast.
