Summary/Abstract: The aim of this paper is to consider the nature of changes in the fiscal deficit and public debt of the Republic of Serbia and propose measures to reduce them, based on the analysis of selected statistical and academic sources. The fiscal deficit and the public debt of the Republic of Serbia constitute the subject determination of the paper. After presenting certain effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the authors investigate: the causes of the change in the fiscal deficit and public debt of the Republic of Serbia; the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on the fiscal deficit and public debt of the Republic of Serbia; and the activity of the government in terms of reducing the fiscal deficit and public debt of the Republic of Serbia. The knowledge that is the result of this research should: contribute to the improvement of fiscal discipline; enable the determination of factors that make public debt and GDP growth sustainable taking into account fiscal constraints and risks.
