Reflections of Antinatalist Currents of Thought on Social Media: The Case of Reddit

Summary/Abstract: In recent demographic structure where fertility is decreasing, ideational in addition to structural changes account for fertility decline. These ideational changes reflect upon rise of popularity of antinatalism and childfree currents of thoughts. The idea of rejecting procreation, which is the common point of both currents, may cause fertility rate decrease. It is also social media platforms where these ideational currents are embodied. In this study, categorical and relational analyses are conducted upon 217 “antinatalism” hashtags and 817 “childfree” hashtags in 2020- 2021 in Reddit. This study aimed at determining themes and categories, which are produced within the currents, revealing the relations between currents and discussing effects of all these on fertility. Findings show that posts with hashtag of antinatalism have the categories of reproduction, catastrophe, intolerance, idea/politics, compliance, capitalism and individualization. Both antinatalism and childfree currents have similar effects on fertility, yet they are products of different ideational processes.
