Summary/Abstract: The article analyses the peculiarities of a meaning the literary of military experience by direct participants in hostilities (combatants). A subcategory of a broad group of narratives united under the name “war prose” is singled out. These are combatant prose – texts, the creators of which are exclusively authors with combat experience. The research analyses the fiction and non fiction works of Ukrainian literature that appeared as a result of the traumatic impact of the First and Second World Wars, as well as the modern Russian Ukrainian conflict. Determinated common features of these works are defined, which make it possible to talk about a separate subcategory. These features are: a story from a direct participant in hostilities; the works which describe military everyday life as honestly as possible (trench truth); lack of romanticization of war, excessive heroism and pathos; affirming the value of an individual person and the great importance of military fraternity; fixing the memory of fallen comrades; focusing on the problematic return to a peaceful society. It is noted that the differences in these texts appear under the influence of the historical era and its ideological or conceptual vectors. Also, the expansion of the literary military tradition is influenced by technological development, which provides an opportunity to enrich the palette of text creating techniques, as well as to reduce the distance between the author and his work and the reader.
