A Study on Awareness, Use and Future Expectations of Cryptocurrencies in Turkey

Summary/Abstract: Purpose – In this study, it is aimed to measure the awareness levels of individuals living in Turkey and to determine whether crypto money ownership differs according to the demographic characteristics of individuals. Another aim of the study is to determine which cryptocurrencies individuals know and use more. Desing/methodology/apporoach – Individuals living in Turkey were asked questions about their level of knowledge about cryptocurrencies, whether they have cryptocurrencies and if they have cryptocurrencies, which ones, and the answers were analyzed with statistical methods. Data were collected from 1211 individuals in total by online survey technique. The obtained data were analyzed with SPSS 28 statistical package program. to the data; reliability analysis, frequency analysis, t-test and ANOVA analysis were applied. Findings – As a result of frequency analysis; It has been determined that the genders of the participants are largely close, the age groups are between 18-31, the majority of the participants are actively working, their income level is at the minimum wage level, and their education level is at the undergraduate level. It has been determined that the awareness of the participants about cryptocurrencies is very high (91.4%) and the majority of them have knowledge within the last 1 year. The rate of participants who own any crypto money (22%) was found to be much lower, contrary to awareness. The most known cryptocurrencies by the participants are respectively; It has been found to be in the form of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and Ripple. Discussion – It is stated that 89% of the cryptocurrency awareness in Canada, 5% of the cryptocurrency ownership, 37.5% of the cryptocurrency ownership in India and 94.7% of the individuals in Malaysia have a basic knowledge of cryptocurrencies and 80% of the use of cryptocurrencies. detected in previous studies. In the light of this information, it is possible to say that the ownership of cryptocurrencies in developing countries is higher than in developed countries.
