Participation of the Jews from Bitola and the Bitola Region in the National Liberation and Anti-Fascist War in Macedonia

Summary/Abstract: Because of their geostrategic significance in the Second World War, Bitola and the region around Bitola hold a special place in terms of the interests of the occupying forces and in terms of the development of the People’s Liberation and Anti-Fascist War. The participation of the Jews from Bitola and the Bitola region in the National Liberation and Anti-Fascist War is closely related to the development processes that gave rise to the National Liberation War which later turned into a general national war. Compared to other cities in Macedonia where Jews lived, traditionally organized in Jewish religious communities, a greater percentage of Jews from the city of Bitola took part in the People’s Liberation War.
