Summary/Abstract: The text comments on Asen Ovcharov’s creative work and his role in the development of Bulgarian popular music in the first half of the 20th century. His musical arrangements, which laid the foundation of the popular music repertoire in Bulgaria, have been specifically looked at. This, in turn, implies the discussion of certain essential features of dance-related musical pieces in the 1930s and 1940s as well as their rendition in Ovcharov’s works. Some of them were later to become a “conduit” for stylistic orientations towards the rapidly spreading jazz music against the background of the urban intonation environment in Bulgaria. Concrete examples representing the expressive idiomatics of the selected musical artefacts have been commented on. With all reservations, the arrangements considered can be seen as examples of either non-jazz stylistics or as pieces with jazz-related musical colouring.
