Summary/Abstract: The article looks at diverse aspects of the legal regulation of veneration of the Virgin Mary and the saints. It draws primarily on the current Code of Canon Law but points out that the regulation in the 1917 Code was far more detailed and therefore it also gives the reader numerous norms of that code. The Marian cult far surpasses in importance the veneration of other saints and so the legislation reflects Marian liturgical feasts, Marian dogmas and the obligation of seminarians, clerics and the religious to acquire Marian spirituality. Veneration of the saints was rejected by the Protestant Reformation and thus became one of the distinctive features of Catholic piety, as was confirmed above all by the Council of Trent. Canon law, in particular, deals with the issue of veneration of sacred images and the relics of the saints. While acknowledging legitimacy to such forms of veneration, it also sets itself apart from the excesses that can creep into this church practice.
