Summary/Abstract: The handicapped people social integration issues are significant because the social consequences caused by disabilities are numerous. The limitations, caused by disabilities lead to less social contacts and more and more sedentary activities at home. There are prejudices based upon the common view that there are no prospects for development of the handicapped people, that they are very limited both intellectually and physically. In Bulgaria is still in use the medical approach in the work with handicapped people, which approach focuses the state efforts on healing the disability. That approach determines the social roles of the person in regard with their disability and not their capabilities. People who have adopted a disability in the course of their lives are forced to go through the re-socialization process – to move from one social group to another. They face the need to change their social identity. The new identity is not based on the similarity of the interests and the values of each of the members of the group, but is forced by a disability, identity of the flaws, of the limitations on the proper life. The social integration issues of the handicapped people lead to aggravation of the quality of life.
