Lviv Cheders during the Galician Autonomy Period (1867-1914)

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents the functioning of cheders, i.e. traditional Jewish schools, in Lviv in the period of Galician autonomy. The author discusses the attitude the common Jewish population as well as progressive Jews, Zionists and school authorities had towards cheders. The author presents statistical data concerning cheders and their students, conditions for learning, and, further, describes the educational authorities’ pursuit of complete supervision over this type of school. The analysis is based on documents available primarily in Central State Archives of Ukraine in Lvov, hence relatively little known.
