Summary/Abstract: The period from the fortieth day following the birth to puberty is called “childhood”. There are a series of rules, customs, ceremonies, procedures and practices that follow the development of the child after birth and regulate his relations with the mother and father, other members of the family and the social environment. In this period, in order for the child to be protected, raised, and become an individual in harmony with the value judgments of the society to which he belongs, he must obey and learn many unwritten rules. Processes and practices, customs and ceremonies performed in childhood are sometimes applied rigidly and sometimes in a flexible manner, depending on their importance and order. Today, child development experts deal with the periods from birth to the end of adolescence in certain age groups and examine these periods in different categories in terms of the child’s physical development, cognitive development, motor development, language development, emotional development and social development. The subject of this study is to identify and write down the childhood practices that are still living in Adana today. The information gathered from the field through observation and interview has been classified according to the above-listed stages of childhood, taking into account the perspective and approach of educational sciences. During the processing of the data obtained, the relevant topics of folklore were processed and written down, taking into account the child’s physical development, cognitive development, motor development, language development, emotional development and social development. With this method used, a scientific classification was tried to be applied to the data with an attempt to evaluate this period of Turkish folklore, which is generally included among the birth practices and whose details are overlooked, under an individual title.
