Summary/Abstract: The termination of the membership of the Russian Federation inthe Council of Europe in March 2022 also meant the termination ofits status as a contracting party to the European Convention for theProtection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, with a notice period of six months. These circumstances inspire to take a lookat the practice of the Court in Strasbourg in relation to Russia for thepast quarter of a century, when Russia was a member of the Convention. The analysis of judicial practice offers an answer to the question ofhow the convention system affected the legal and institutional framework of Russia and how the termination of membership will affectthe level of protection of basic human rights and freedoms in Russia.
