Summary/Abstract: The concept of „informal empire” was conceived in the 1950s with the publication of the article by John Gallagher and Ronald Robinson intitled The Imperialism of Free Trade. The purpose of this article is to define the meaning and provide an overview of the practical application of the con-cept in the context of some concrete examples from Latin America, such as the case of the promotion of free trade and investments, as well as the abolishment of slave trade.
