Summary/Abstract: Starting with the claim that deixes are lexical and grammatical means used by the speaker to reveal something about the nature of his/her participation in an actual communicative situation (Filmore), i.e., that they are the elements that refer to the context, special attention will be given to deixis and deixicity in various types of discourse and/or communicative practices in academic discourse. We will focus both on deixis in the narrower sense of the term, primarily personal (e.g., ja ‘I’and mi ‘we’), temporal, social (e.g., vi ‘you; 2nd person pl.’ vs. ti ‘you; 2nd person sg.’), and textual and discourse deixes. Deixicity in the broader sense of the term will be discussed in those situations when certain linguistic choices reveal something about the speaker and his/her involvement in the context (e.g., use of tenses, modals, etc.). Finally, the insights we have gained will lead us to question the (hypo)thesis about the impersonality and/or objectivity of scientific text, and, as a result, may also contribute to a better understanding of some of the characteristics of scientific communication
