Summary/Abstract: This paper scrutinizes the position of church-run schools among early selective grammar schools, and – based on the analysis of survey results – the attitudes and practices of the applicants to these schools. The results highlight some important differences between applicants to church-run and to other schools in terms of the main social functions attributed to schooling, the reasons for application, and the practices during the months of preparation to the entrance exams.
