PROVIDING SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGING THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMALL AND MEDIUM ENTERPRISES IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

Summary/Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises, especially those operating in the non-financial business sector, are given special importance in the European Union because they significantly contribute to the growth and development of the European economy, increase added value and annual turnover, and increase employment. The European Commission deals with providing support, assistance and incentives for the development of small and medium enterprises by taking various measures and implementing program activities. The aim of this paper is to highlight the way of defining these enterprises, as a very important factor that determines the access to finance and various support programs that the European Union directs to the SME sector. In addition to the chronological overview of the criteria for defining the most important programs to support the development of entrepreneurship, special attention will be paid to the importance of SMEs for economic development of the European Union, as well as the European framework of entrepreneurial competencies.
