Summary/Abstract: Due to its geographical remoteness, the region of Northern Europe has never been a research priority for Bulgarian historians. The deficient political and economic ties between the Balkans and the Nordic countries predetermine the lack of accurate information and scholarly literature on Scandinavian culture. The study examines the old printed books from the Bulgarian National Revival period in search of records about the historical events in the Nor¬dic region and specific data about the particular countries and the various ethnic groups there. The establishment of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1888 and then of the Faculty of Classical and Modern Philology promoted even further the development of scholarly and cultural cooperation with the region of Northern Europe in various directions. Considering the ever-growing connection between Bulgaria and the Nordic countries, as members or partners of the European Union, there is a good reason to discuss in more depth the Nordic-Bulgarian scholarly cooperation, which shows that despite the physical and cultural distance between those nations, the barriers might be overcome.
