Summary/Abstract: This article proposes an affective and emotionalmodel for reading the bookDzieci,których nie ma [ChildrenWho Are Not Here] by Renata Piątkowska, taking into accountthe stylistic and narrative mechanisms influencing readers’ reactions.The paper focuses,in particular, on methods of literary presentation of a child-prisoner, physical and mentalviolence against children, and a child’s body. It analysesmechanisms used to describe hungry,ill, disabled, traumatised and dead children. Furthermore, the problem of receptive ambiva-lence, constructed between “prosthetic empathy” and sense of repulsion, and between affectand abject, is also noted.
