Once Again about the Old Bulgarian Translations and Versions of the Dialogues of Pope Gregory the Great

Summary/Abstract: The article reraises the question of the Old Bulgarian translations and versions of the Dialogues of Pope Gregory the Great. The research draws on the excellent edition of Cristiano Diddi “Патерик Римский. Диалоги Григория Великого в древнеславянском переводе” (Roman Patericon. The Old Slavonic Translation of the Dialogues of Pope Gregory the Great. Moscow, 2001). In the extensive introductory part of the publication of the full version of the translation (which he called A2) Diddi adduces several arguments in support of his thesis that the full translation of the Dialogues (A2) was the first to appear in Old Bulgarian literature and that it was abridged as version A1 in a later Old Bulgarian period. Based on the analysis presented in the current publication, the author argues that the abridged version was the first to be translated in Bulgaria prior to the rule of king Simeon. Subsequently this brief anthology underwent a thorough revision in terms of vocabulary and translation principles thus resulting in the Simeon-period version A2.
