Economical Aspects of small hydro power plants

Summary/Abstract: Due to a rapid increase in electricity demand alternative sources of energy are beeing developed over the world. In this article the author concentrates on small hydropower plants due to its still unused potential. Mountainous rivers are unsuitable in Poland, but there is still a large amount of energy from flatland rivers that can be used to produce electricity. Willing to locate a new site for power plant it is crucial to take into consideration not only economical but also ecological and social aspects of such an investment. This article presents an overview of a new method based on geographic information systems that has been developed to search for new locations that fulfill requests of decision - makers.
