Summary/Abstract: The lack of manpower and human resources that will meet increasingly demanding competition needs has become a challenge in all parts of the world. Regardless of the business field, a quality individual can choose a job, conditions, and benefits. Precisely because of the competition, it is difficult to retain existing employees and offer them anoptimal environment to be satisfied in the long run. This challenge is particularly seen in the field of information and communication technologies. The exceptional demand for this profession on the one hand, and the lack of new experts on the other, caused a serious discrepancy between supply and demand. For some time now, financial compensation has not een the only condition under which employees choose the company in which they will stay. In order to bridge the gap at least partially, and with the aim of further expanding the business, companies are forced to find newer models of employee development. As a solution, mandatory internships are proposed. They are providing insight into a real job and its challenges to a student. For the employer, such an approach is enabling the opportunity to build a future employee as well as to know him better and create a long-term relationship. Through in-depth interviews with several IT companies, the aim of the paper is to check what the positive examples in student internships are, and what are the challenges or shortcomings. On the student side, the sample of the College of Applied Sciences „Lavoslav Ruzicka“ in Vukovar students is chosen in order to research how many individuals are ready for practice and under what conditions. Based on the analysis of the results, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of student internships, the paper gives guidelines on the possibilities of student internships as a foundation for the development of companies.
