Summary/Abstract: The existence of the Bucharest Gymnastics Association has been shaped throughout history by the position of the Bucharest German community in society. From a small community under the protection of the Swedish Crown, a protection afforded by the common evangelical faith, and then under the dual auspices of Austria-Hungary and Prussia/ the German Empire, it became part of the larger German community in Greater Romania after the First World War. The article presents the gymnastic, social and cultural development within the Bucharest Gymnastics Club from its founding in 1867 to the First World War and at the same time aims to illustrate the features of the Bucharest German community (which has so far been little researched) based on its cultural and social life.
