Summary/Abstract: The article focuses on literature’s place in a social, historical and cultural context. It also explores literature’s political commitment across different periods in history. Special attention is placed on the notion of the “autonomy of art” and the self-determination of authors and separate literary movements as apolitical – something which often does not correspond to their real impact on social processes. The article also poses the question how literature influences the reader in a cognitive and emotional way via direct political and moral messages, via innovative aesthetic forms, and via the creation of an alternate reality. The article has a didactic focus and is intended for students in philological disciplines.
